Eric and Alan Busby’s Memorial Tree

On Saturday 6th November, a group of friends and family of Olive and Bunty Busby gathered on Old Wives Lees village green to plant a tree in memory of their late husbands, Eric and Alan. Both men had long associations with Chilham parish, Old Wives Lees in particular, and they were both members of Chilham Fire Brigade. 

Eric was the Sub Officer when he retired and he received the British Empire medal for his long service to the fire brigade. Eric and Olive lived at Phyllis Farm in Old Wives Lees for many years, where they grew soft fruit. Eric was also a parish councillor and village tree warden. 

Alan was an accomplished firefighter and driver, and he was given the nickname “Mr Fix-it” by the other firefighters because he frequently used to spend drill nights repairing things at the station. He was also a good footballer, and played for Chilham before going on to become a firm, but fair, referee. 

The tree that was planted was Cornus kousa, a variety of dogwood. It has white flowers in spring, followed by pink berries in the autumn.
