Student game project shortlisted for BAFTA competition

A student on our Games Development course has made the shortlist for BAFTA’s Young Game Designers 2023 Competition.

Aden Fawcett, who is studying Games Development Level 3, submitted his game “TimeCoil” to BAFTA after being informed about the contest by his College tutors, who recommended he enter. The game was initially designed as a College project, in which students had to pick a historical figure and a time period and come up with a game, taking it from concept to fully realised vision.

Aden picked Nikola Tesla for his game, who was teleported back to Medieval times in the story. The concept is that Tesla has to create a way back or recreate the time machine that originally got him stuck in these times, using parts from the time.

Although the final game didn’t get picked as one of the finalists, Aden has been invited by BAFTA to attend an event in London and see the winning games, who will be featured in the Power Up experience at the Science Museum in July. This is a great opportunity for Aden to learn more from the industry going forward.

Aden is now hard at work updating the game for the College’s annual end of year show and plans to update it in the future and see how far it can go.

Speaking about his experience with the contest, Aden said: “I am very proud as I never expected the game to make it this far, and I am proud that I have taken part in this opportunity. The experience has been very enjoyable, and I’ve loved seeing the project go from a concept and ideas in my head to a full game that I can watch people play. It has been such a joy, the animation, the coding, the levels of detail to the actual idea have gone really well and I’ve enjoyed every bit of it. “

“This is a very big step for the opportunities that I have, especially when using this competition in CV’s for jobs and anything like that. It’s a really cool and interesting concept for a game that I feel could go pretty far if its more developed perhaps by adding more storylines and an expanded world.”
