We recently held our Virtual Medical Society Graduation. Since October 2021, the Virtual Medical Society has been providing an exciting and enriching experience for 53 students from Years 9, 10 and 11. Held bi-weekly until May 2023, the programme aimed to contextualize the key stage 4 and 5 science curriculum through the world of medicine.

One of the highlights of the programme was the dynamic mix of live zoom sessions led by our dedicated Widening Participation Fellow and Junior Doctor, Ahsan Ashfaq. These sessions brought the science curriculum to life by exploring its applications in the field of medicine. Students had the opportunity to delve deeper into various medical topics, ask questions, and engage in interactive discussions.

Supporting the programme were our incredible student ambassadors who acted as mentors during the zoom sessions. Their guidance, experience, and enthusiasm played a crucial role in inspiring and motivating the participants on their journey towards becoming potential future doctors.

To mark the successful completion of the programme, we organized an in-person graduation ceremony. 44 students from across the programme came together to celebrate their achievements and take part in a range of engaging activities. The simulation suite practical, led by Dr Tim Collins, provided an immersive experience, while the ultrasound activity facilitated by Dr Philip Chan allowed students to explore the world of medical imaging. Additionally, the Sports Lab team at Canterbury Christ Church University conducted a V02 max activity, highlighting the importance of fitness in the medical field. We also extended a warm invitation to parents, who joined us for the event. They had the opportunity to attend insightful talks on supporting their students in their pursuit of a career in medicine, gaining valuable knowledge to help guide their children’s aspirations.

The event culminated in a heartfelt graduation ceremony, where students were called up to receive their well-deserved certificates in front of their proud family and friends. It was a joyous occasion that celebrated the hard work, dedication, and growth demonstrated by each participant throughout the programme.

A parent of a student commented:

“The KMMS Virtual Medical Society has been a fantastic experience. As parents we have gained invaluable insights into the complexities of applying for Medical School in the future. It has equipped us with the knowledge we need to assist our daughter in making choices that will help her on her journey to becoming a Doctor. Seeing the facilities and meeting the academics who lead the program is truly inspirational.”

On their own experience, a student stated:

“I found the KMMS Virtual Medical Society very useful as it has helped me understand exactly what I need to do to gain access to Medical School. The lectures were fun and informative and helped me with my GCSE studies. It was great to meet fellow peers who have the same interests as me. I particularly enjoyed attending the Graduation Day as we got hands on experience using Ultrasound. We got to tour the facilities and learned some new skills in the Skills Lab.”

Our Outreach Officer has said the Virtual Medical Society programme:

“bridges the gap between the classroom and the exciting world of medicine. It was fantastic to see passionate young people ignite their passion for medicine by interacting with relatable role models in the way of our student ambassadors and our WP fellow.”

We would like to express our deepest appreciation to all the students, parents, facilitators, and student ambassadors who made the Virtual Medical Society a resounding success. It is through their collective efforts that we continue to inspire the next generation of future doctors.
