Studying Art and Design at EKC Dover College can open a range of possibilities.

From working on local regeneration projects such as Dover’s Beacon Project, to having your artwork displayed in a public exhibition, you will gain a range of experiences that will boost your art skills. 

With the purpose-built art studios overlooking the town of Dover, equipped with Mac computer suites and professional photography equipment, you will also create lots of unique art projects for your artists portfolio that can be used for university applications.  

Here are just some of the creative careers you can explore: 

Graphic Designer:  

Use your design skills to create compelling visuals for brands, advertising campaigns, and digital media. Your work could range from designing logos and branding materials, to creating layouts for magazines and websites. Our Mac suites come installed with the Adobe Creative Suite, meaning you can explore technical skills on programmes such as Photoshop and Illustrator. 

Set Designer:  

Bring stories to life by creating the visual environments for theatrical productions, films, or television shows. Your work will involve designing and constructing sets that transport audiences to different worlds and eras. 

Museum Guide:  

Combine your artistic knowledge with teaching skills to develop and deliver educational programs for museums or galleries. Your work could involve creating interactive exhibits, leading tours, or facilitating workshops to engage visitors and share your passion for art. The Dover Museum for example illustrates the history of the town and the local area through its’ collection of paintings, documents and models. 

Animator:

Captivate audiences of all ages through animation, working on films, video games, or online content. Whether you’re creating hand-drawn animations or working with the latest 3D software, your work can fit into many artistic mediums. Our learners  have previously created projects around stop-motion photography and Claymation.  

Tattoo Artist:

If you’re a keen illustrator, good with people and business-minded you can express your artistic talents through the art form of tattoos. Taking part in College projects and social action will enable you to gain the customer service, business and project management skills that are vital for any Tattoo artist. Your work could involve creating custom designs, mastering various techniques through and working in a tattoo studio. 

Fashion Designer:

Create innovative clothing and accessories, and launch your own brand or work with established fashion houses. You could see your designs on runways, in high street stores, or even as bespoke pieces for individual clients. 

Art Therapist:

Use your artistic skills alongside psychology and counselling to help individuals express themselves and cope with emotional or behavioural challenges. Your work could involve leading art therapy sessions in hospitals and schools. 

Product Designer:

Look into form and function to create innovative and user-friendly products. Your work could involve designing consumer goods, considering both how they look and how they work. On the Art and Design courses, you are set custom briefs in which you have to create unique artworks that fit a theme. This gives you an insight into this job role. 

Photographer:

Capture moments, tell stories, and create art through the lens of your camera in fields such as portrait, landscape, fashion, or commercial photography. Your work might appear in galleries, magazines, or as part of an advertising campaign. Experiment in College with capturing the perfect image thanks to professional photography equipment such as lighting rigs and digital cameras. 

Illustrator:

Produce illustrations for books, magazines, advertising, and product packaging, making ideas stand out. Your illustrations will help tell stories, explain complex ideas, or add a touch of creativity to everyday items. 


 

Art Director:

Lead the visual styling and imagery of magazines, advertising, product packaging, and movie productions. As an art director, you will oversee the visual aspects of a project, ensuring a cohesive and appealing look.  This role requires you to have artistic talent, management skills, and a keen eye for design. 

Curator:

Manage collections of artwork and artefacts, planning exhibitions, and acquiring new pieces for museums or galleries. Your role will involve researching and selecting works that educate and inspire the public. Dover art students get to see what it is like to be a curator in preparation for the end-of-year exhibition, by picking out selected pieces that they want to see in the exhibition. 

Event Designer:

Conceptualise and create the visual aspects of events such as weddings, corporate events, and festivals. From the overall theme to the smallest detail, your designs will enhance the experience for attendees. The end of year exhibition is designed and organised with student involvement, with every aspect and decision looked at. 

Ceramicist:

Create beautiful and functional objects from clay, ranging from pottery and sculptures to tiles and tableware. Your handcrafted pieces can be both works of art and everyday items. Modelling clay in the art studio is available for you to design intricate projects, with current students creating a range of items for their final year projects. 


Exhibition Designer:

Plan and design the layout and aesthetic of exhibitions in museums, galleries, and trade shows. Your work will ensure that exhibits are engaging, informative, and visually stunning. Trips to locations such as the Maison Dieu, Dover Castle and the Dover Museum will showcase how important this role is in the art industry. 

These are just a few examples of the many creative careers you could pursue with a background in Creative and Design. With the skills and experiences you gain at EKC Dover College, you will be ready to step into these careers through an apprenticeship, entry-level roles, connections you make in work experience or universities across the country.
