A new state-of-the-art facility will train professionals to retrofit domestic and commercial properties with renewable energy solutions.

Following an award from the Local Skills Improvement Fund (LSIF), MidKent College will shortly begin construction of a new training centre at it’s Maidstone Campus dedicated to equipping professionals with the skills and knowledge needed to retrofit properties with sustainable energy solutions.

In response to the urgent need for a sustainable and eco-friendly future, construction of the training centre on the College’s Oakwood Park estate begins in February 2024. The center is poised to play a pivotal role in revolutionising the way domestic and commercial properties across the country are retrofitted with renewable energy sources.

The centre will boast a cutting-edge curriculum designed to address the evolving demands of the construction and building services sectors, offering courses across a spectrum of renewable energy technologies, including solar panels, energy-efficient heating systems, insulation solutions, and smart building technologies. Industry experts, academics, and seasoned professionals will lead these programs, ensuring participants gain hands-on experience and insights into the latest advancements in sustainable retrofitting.

The launch of this training center aligns with the UK government’s commitment to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050, and the College’s own aspirations to reach net zero on its own operations by 2030. Retrofitting existing properties is a key strategy in reducing carbon footprints, and the centre is positioned to be at the forefront of driving this transformative change.

Not only does this initiative contribute significantly to environmental sustainability, but it also addresses the need for skilled workers in the burgeoning green job market.

The centre will open in late 2024.
