EKC Broadstairs College students showcased their skills at the KFE4Skills 2024 inter-college student skills competition. The annual skills competition saw more than 200 students from colleges across Kent and Medway compete in competitions spanning a range of industry categories.

Hospitality, Carpentry and Painting and Decorating students from EKC Broadstairs College participated in the event which took place across three campus sites on 29 February, 5 March and 8 March.

Level 3 Hospitality and Catering student, Sophie Wright, was awarded silver in the Culinary Arts category in the Commercial Industries competition at MidKent College’s Medway Campus after impressing the judges with her culinary creations and skills. She prepared a classic chicken dish called ‘Poulet Sauté a la Hongroise’ and a dish using soft boiled eggs called ‘Oeufs Chasseur’.

EKC Folkestone College hosted the Trade Industries competitions during which Level 2 Site Carpentry student, Morgan Berry, built a roof with fascia and bargeboard and Level 2 Painting and Decorating student, Romy Miles, painted a wall following a specified design.

The live skills competitions are an opportunity for students to demonstrate the skills and knowledge they have acquired during their course with judges choosing the top three in each category. Participants gain experience they can put on their CV and finalists can progress to regional and national competitions such as WorldSkills UK.

Deputy Head of Technical Industries at EKC Broadstairs College, Paul Nelson, who went to support the students at the event, said: “The competitions are a great experience for all the students. It brings students from different levels and colleges together and they can learn off each other as they get to see how other students work. The experience is a great confidence booster for the students.”
